Mount Pleasant High School was among more than 7,500 communities and 1 million Americans that celebrated Lights On Afterschool on October 18. This nationwide event, organized by the Afterschool Alliance, was a rally to support our after school programs. After school programs keep kids safe, help working families, and inspire learning. According to www.afterschoolalliance.org, 14.3 million children in the United States go home alone after school.
The teachers at Mount Pleasant High School participated in several ways. Many of the teachers dressed in the garb of their favorite activity including customized T-shirts, uniforms, and even creative costumes. The advisor for the Environmental Club creatively wore attire consisting of autumn leaves. The school featured a bulletin board in the main hallway promoting all of the clubs, organizations, and activities in the company of the 2007 Afterschool Alliance poster. MPHSKnights.com, the school web site, also highlighted the importance of the campaign.
The Broadcast Learning Center of the Brandywine School District provided the media support to generate awareness for the many student opportunities after school. The school radio station, WMPH 91.7 FM, aired announcements prior to the event recorded by the undergraduate disc jockeys to promote Lights On Afterschool. The school closed-circuit television station aired a puppet skit to the entire student body on the day of the event. The entertaining recruitment sketch encouraged all students to join an after school activity. Many students of Mount Pleasant High School were inspired, and at the end of the school day on Thursday, a number of young people inquired to find out more about the after school resources offered to them.
